Thursday Thirteen – Favorites

My friend Becky has been pestering me about Thursday Thirteen for a few months. I haven’t been doing a Thursday Thirteen because I always participate in You Capture and it’s hard to write two posts every Wednesday night. I made a promise earlier in the week to bring Thursday Thirteen back this week.

So, without further ado, may I present to you, Thursday Thirteen: My Favorite Things.

(And speaking of my favorite things, you should go here right quick and sign up to win some of my favorite things. Just like Oprah, only NOT.)

Go ahead, I’ll wait.

I’ll be sharing a few of my other favorite things.

1. My favorite Poptart – Chocolate fudge. For as long as I can remember, I have been a fan of the poptart. In fact, my twin brothers and I used to hide them from one another. None of the other Kelloggs poptarts even come close, especially when you consider the awesomeness of the chocolate fudge poptart after it has been toasted and dunked into a glass of ice-cold milk.

2. My favorite soft drink – No real surprise here. Dr. Pepper takes it with a landslide UNLESS I am in a restaurant and THEN I would rather have a coke. For some reason, Dr. Pepper straight out of the fountain does not taste the same to me.

3. My favorite iPhone APP – This one is so, so hard because I have six screens full of APPS. As a matter of fact, I could spend half the day browsing the APP store because it is so easy to get caught up in all of the hype and excitement of whatwilltheythinkofnext? I am waiting for an APP that will dust my house. (Are you listening Steve Jobs?) Without question though, I’d have to say that I spend more time on Words With Friends than any other APP, except for maybe, Facebook so it is only fitting that I would choose it as my favorite. (Oh, and if you’re in the market for another opponent on Words With Friends, I’m Juliewv).

4. My favorite You Tube video – A few weeks ago a friend of mine posted a You Tube video on the Facebook. As I watched it, I laughed like a crazy person especially when she said, “This snow has set me back!” I knew I had found my people and since watching her video for the first time I’ve Googled her, Facebooked her, You Tubed her and now I’m blogging about her. So, yeah, she’s funny! If you need a laugh, you should definitely watch this one.

5. My favorite hottie – This is a tough one because y’all know there are a lotof hotties out there. When I typed the words favorite and hottie, of course McDaddy is the first hottie I thought of. That’s a given around here though, so I should say My favorite second hottie. One hottie immediately came to mind and I thought it might be wise to take some time to think on this one before putting it out there. I made it all the way to number eight here on my list and then decided to lock in this choice. When I first saw this particular hottie, he was a star on The Young and The Restless. Currently, he plays FBI Agent Derrick Morgan on Criminal Minds which means that he gets to show off his muscles mad acting skills as he plays Mr. Bang Bang Shootem’ Up tough guy.

My favorite hottie: Shemar Moore

Sweet holy Moses, he’s a cutie.

6. My favorite month – I’d have to say July simply because there is not one. single. day. of school during the month of July which means I don’t have to answer to my stupid alarm clock. Otherwise, I would pick October because I love fall and the beautiful changing colors and it is not 312 degrees.

7. My favorite talk show – The View. (Insert eye roll here). I have watched The View for several years and part of the reason is because of the hot topics segment. I just love Whoopie Goldberg as moderator even though I don’t always agree with her thoughts. While I am not particularly fond of their constant talking over top of one another, I can certainly see how it could happen. So much to say, so little time.

I get it.

8. My favorite cereal – Lucky Charms. I have always been a big fan of cereal. In the words of my granny, “I can eat cereal when I can’t eat anything else.”

9. My favorite color – Orange. It’s bold and bright and loud. Just like, well never mind.

10. My favorite way to spend an hour – MASSAGE!

Did you hear me, McDaddy? I said a massage. Valentine’s Day is coming up AND I’m trying to help you out here.

11. My favorite blogger – Big Mama. Y’all. There are hundreds, probably thousands of talented bloggers out there, so believe me when I say there are many more I could add to my list of favorites. Melanie has a knack for telling a story and she is where I go for MY daily dose of crazy. The difference is she’s not nearly as goofy as I am. Oh, and plus she’s way more talented than I am.

12. My favorite restaurant – Olive Garden. Since my first visit to Olive Garden (in Los Angeles) back in the 80’s, it ranked among my favorite restaurants. I was a teenager and it was quite possibly the fanciest restaurant I had ever been to. Not long after that, the Olive Garden popped up in Charleston, WV (we are always a bit behind the times) and it is now my favorite. I have only ever ordered spaghetti with meat sauce, salad and bread sticks. And if I’m feeling particularly rowdy, I might also order tiramisu. In my humble opinion, there isn’t a better dinner out there.

13. My favorite soup – Potato.  A big bowl of potato soup in perfect harmony with a handful of shredded cheese and chunks of cornbread on a cold day is hard to beat.

Happy Thursday, y’all!

Thursday Thirteen – Thirteen Things [and folks] I’m Thankful For!

What better day to tell you thirteen things I’m thankful for than today on this Thanksgiving holiday.

I love Thanksgiving. I have fond memories of waking up very early on Thanksgiving morning to the smell of turkey and pumpkin pie baking in the oven. And, no Thanksgiving is complete without the Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade.  So, yes, I will watch it even today. I will watch it while I dig through the pile of advertising debris as I plot my course for the black Friday shopping extraganza. Yes, I am one of thosepeople. I will rise at O Dark Thirty to hit Kohls, Target, Wal-Mart and probably Sears in search of bargains that likes of which we only see once a year. I’ll be lucky to come away with my sanity. But I’d be lying if I said I didn’t enjoy the hubbub. I’ll let you know how that goes.

Now, back to thirteen things I am thankful for, in no particular order. When I say no particular order, I mean just that. It is more a matter of how they popped into my head as opposed to order of importance.

1. My three fellas – This one is a given, but certainly worth mentioning right off the bat. These fellers are the light of my life. (And yes, we do say fellers around here!)

2. Our Home – With so many people losing their homes these days, I sure am thankful for our home and the joy that fills it.

3.  SLEEP – Sweet mercy, this probably sounds silly, but believe me when I say that I am certainly thankful for sleep. The boys rarely crawl into bed with us anymore and it is glorious to wake up at 6:40am when the alarm clock goes off instead of 3:40am when someone needs to be fed or changed. [Not sure why this picture is so small or how it will look once its posted!]

4. The Blog – The fact that The Blog made the short list of things I’m thankful for will probably leave some of you shaking your head. The fact is that I really enjoy blogging and people love me here. So, its a great place to come and blow off steam or just say hi!  I have also met a lot of people who I consider to be URL Friends (the opposite of IRL – In real life friends). [Hey, remember that princess?]

5. The United States of America –  I have to say that deployment, coupled with our trip to Guantanamo Bay left a lasting impression on me. I will NEVER EVER AS LONG AS I LIVE look at the American flag without thinking about the honor, sacrifice, and courage of the thousands of soldiers stationed all over the world.

6.  My Parental Units – I am thankful that I have my parents and that they live close-by. I had a great childhood with two loving parents.

7.  The In-Law Siblings – When I married McDaddy I gained a truck-load of in-laws because he is the oldest of five children. His two sisters and two brothers (and their spouses) are also our friends. I am thankful most especially for four great sisters-in-law!

8. Deployment Is Over – I am so, so, thankful that we are done with deployment. This time last year we were preparing for deployment. We filled out a will, a power of attorney, and all the other stuff that comes with your husband being out of the country for six-months. I am THANKFUL to have him back at home!

9 . My In-Laws– I LOVE my in-laws. They are living in Florida where my FIL is serving on active duty and I miss them terribly. And I’m not just saying that because my sweet MIL, Jean  reads From Inmates To Playdates daily. She is one of my biggest bloggy fans and frequently makes references to my book. The book that she wants me to write. Someday. If the opportunity were to present itself. Not at all sure what I’d write about. I’m guessing it would be filled with crazy, crazy, and well, more crazy. [Keep in mind that it was a hot August day when McDaddy returned home. My hair kept its flip for all of three minutes in the humidity.]

10.  Our Church – The Lord sent us to our sweet, little church about two months before we were married. We have been worshipping there ever since. Most of our friends are from our church. I have no doubt that I could call any of them at any hour of the day and they would drop what they were doing to come to our rescue. I am thankful for the love I feel when I enter the church doors. I look forward to going to church for each service.

11. My new job– Okay, so its not a new job. Its a job that I’ve been privileged to hold since 2003. While there are days that I miss the craziness that happened in jail, I am so appreciative that I’m the one who is there everyday with my boys. When they are sick it’s me who holds them, when they want to make lego chapels, it’s me who gets to help them design it, when they want to play outside on the swingset, its me who gets to sit and listen to them make big plans about pretend repairs and super jumps off of the swings. I am thankful for the chance to be home with them every day.

12. My twin brothers – While I am not as close to my twin-brothers as I would like to be, I am so thankful they are my brothers.

13. A tie between my TiVo and my iPhone – I know this probably sounds silly! These two little gadgets make my life easier and happier. They save me time and just make my world a better place.

That’s all.

Happy Thanksgiving, y’all!

The ABC’s Of Me

A– Available: Only if you are in need of a driver for a Saturn Sky. Otherwise, I am happily married for 11 years to McDaddy and therefore unavailable.

B – Best friend: My best “guy” friend is McDaddy. My best girl friend is Becky. She has 2 daughters and lives a couple of miles away from me. She likes to talk. As you can guess, we get along fabulously.

C – Cake or pie: Cake. Yellow with chocolate icing is my favorite home-made cake. My next favorite is chocolate with white icing. Me and the cake are good friends.

D – Drink of choice: Almost anything containing caffeine except those new fangled, high falutin coffees. I prefer Dr. Pepper or Coke and, and I prefer them best from a plastic bottle.

E – Essential item you use everyday: My laptop. Now that I’m a famous blogger, I use it daily to record the happening of my head and my home. Okay, so I’m not famous yet, but my eight readers love me.

F – Favorite color: Orange

G – Gummy bears or worms: Worms. They remind me of my days in college. I would eat gummy worms to make it through those B-O-R-I-N-G Economics lectures.

H – Hometown: Charleston, West Virginia (no, that is not western Virginia).

I – Indulgence: Massage. I love a good massage and I prefer it to be quiet.

J – January or February: February because that’s the month of Valentines Day and also closer to Spring than January.

K – Kids: 2 sweet boys.

L – Life is incomplete without: My family.

M – Marriage date: May 23, 1998

N – Number of siblings: I have twin brothers who are 4 years older than me.

O – Oranges or Apples: I don’t eat much of either one, but I would prefer an apple because its not as messy.

P – Phobias/Fears: I really don’t like bugs or critters of any kind.

Q– Favorite Quote: “When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left, and could say, I used everything you gave me” — Erma Bombeck. I also like the one that says “To the world you are but one person, but to one person you are the world.”

R – Reason to smile: When the 4 of us are together and everyone is happy.

S – Season: Fall

T– Thing you’d have if you had all kinds of money: This is a no-brainer. The Saturn Sky

U – Unknown fact about myself: I really have no patience for people who are ALWAYS late.

V – Vegetable you don’t like: I’d have to say cauliflower.

W – Worst habit: Being impatient

X – X-rays: Teeth, jaws, knee, lungs

Y – Your favorite food: Spaghetti

Z – Zodiac: I’m a Sagittarius, so I’m told. I pay no attention to “signs”, except for ones that say “wrong way.”

Thursday Thirteen – This Time It’s T’s Turn

I am writing this week’s Thursday Thirteen from my sister-in-law’s house in Candia, New Hampshire.

Me and the boys are enjoying our visit and most of all my boys are pre-occupied with their cousins most of the day which leaves me ample time to blog and snack on bon-bons and Dr. Pepper.

Because of that I have been able to stay two or three days ahead of the bloggy boat which is why I am composing my Thursday Thirteen for this week on Monday. (Except for those last three words!)

If my memory serves me correct, we should be on the Letter T.

1. TALKING – I was wired to be a talker. In elementary school, I pretty much always received an “X” in the “Listens attentively” column. What can I say? Well, apparently a lot. –  Still. love. to. talk.

2. TiVO –  I have always been very fond of the television. The invention of the TiVo has become a necessity in my household, especially since so many of the shows that I love are not fit for viewing by my boys. Some of my favorite shows are The Young And The Restless, American Idol, Dancing With The Stars, Desperate Housewives, Greys Anatomy and The View.

3. TEMPERATURE – I am very particular about the temperature. My ideal temperature would be 85 degrees with zero humidity. Humidity makes me cranky.

4. TIARA – I don’t wear one, but I would should. I would pick one like this one from

5. TONSILS – Had mine removed in the 6th grade. The only part I remember is the enema.

6. TRUCK – McDaddy would like to trade our 4-Runner for a truck. I would pick this one for him. A 2009 Chevy Silverado SS. Not that I know the first thing about trucks, but surely the whole ‘SS’ thing means something cool like Super Special. (It probably means Super Sport now that I think about it.)

7. TWINS – I have twin brothers that are four years older than me. My cousin, Sarah gave birth to twin boys in January. Multiples are proof that God has a sense of humor. I lovingly refer to these guys as Scrubby and Stubby.

8. TEXAS – McDaddy and I spent two weeks in Houston, Texas so that he could attend some type of control system guru training. When he goes to training, I scrapbook in the hotel room. While we were in Texas we drove to Galveston for an afternoon. We have been blessed to travel quite a bit on his company’s dime.

9. TARGET – I go there occasionally, but, I prefer the Mart Of Walls any day of the week.

10. TATTLE – Something I deal with on a daily basis with my boys. It is tough deciding what should be tattlable and what shouldn’t be.

11. THE MAN – This one came to be as I was talking to McDaddy on the phone last night. I assume he was referring to himself because in my book, he IS the man. (Hi McDaddy! I miss you!)

12. THANKFUL – So very thankful for all of the blessings in my life. Especially for these two happy, healthy little boogers. (Disneyland – 2008)

 13. TOW MATER – Up until now, Lightning McQueen has gotten all the attention here at Inmates. I thought it was high time I give Mater his five seconds of fame. Our boys have just about every frazzlin’ CARS toy ever made. Except that the big-wigs at Disney are so very clever. They discovered that if they take a black sharpie to Lightning McQueen they can market it and call him Tar McQueen. Or, they can color some green on and call him Cactus McQueen.  Or they can take off two wheels and call it Finish Line McQueen. Disney folks, you should be ashamed of yourself. Instead, you are laughing all the way to the bank. Because my boys? They totally fall for your Lightning McQueen scam. Because of that we have 416 versions of Lightning McQueen wearning various paint jobs and tires. And this guy? All he gets is the shaft.

Mater. Stand up and be noticed.

Now, wasn’t that fun?

A special shout out to McDaddy for helping me come up with my last three “T” words this week. (Even for the one I didn’t use!)

Happy To Be At Home hosts a weekly Thursday Thirteen. Head over there and tell them I sent ya!

Thursday Thirteen – Q-tips, Questions and Quirks

It’s that time again.

Thursday Thirteen.

I’m afraid we might have to call this one Thursday Three.

Because seriously, have you ever thought about the letter “Q?”

If I was the letter “Q,” I would scream discrimination.

Or Letterism.

It’s just not fair that the letter “Q’ didn’t get many words for its alphabetic repertoire.

At any rate, I’ll do my best to come up with thirteen.

1. Queen – This one seemed like a no-brainer. Although I call myself the Princess, my age suggests that by now, I should probably promote myself to queen.

2. Q-Tips – A few months back, I began having trouble with my right ear. It began to hurt and within days my top-back-ear (did you get all that?) got real red (yes, I really talk like that) and it started to hurt. A few days later, I could not lay on my right side because my ear was so sore. Around that same time, my inner ear (and I mean way back in there) started to itch. As it turns out, I had an infection that resulted in two rounds of antibiotics and had dry skin on the inside of my ear. When I mentioned to the ENT Doc that I used a q-tip daily to scratch the itch in my way-back-there-inner-ear, he shuddered and made me promise that I would never-ever-use-a-qtip-again-as-long-as-we-both-did-live-so-help-me-God. I had used q-tips for at least 30 years and couldn’t understand why he was asking begging pleading with me to never use them again. His comment? “You should never stick anything smaller than your finger in your ear.” Oh, and he was quite confident that ramming the q-tip  in my way-back-there-inner-ear probably caused the Great Ear Infection Disaster of 2008.

[Side note: I still have to use a prescription ear cream about once a week in my right ear because of dry skin.] My method of getting it way-back-there-in-my-inner-ear?

3. Quiet – is overrated. I choose noise. Mkay? Thanks.

4. Quadruplets – A gal from our lovely, little church is pregnant with quadruplets. I am praying for four, healthy babies. On June 20th, she will find out how many of each she is having. I’m happy for her. Really happy for her. And really, really happy that its her and not me.

5. Quirks – I haul a truck-load around with me every. single. day.

6. Quarrel – One of the thousands of things I miss about McDaddy being deployed. I have no one to quarrel with except a three year old and a six year old. That gets boring.

Oh, but, when I was small, I loved quarreling with these two fellers. Meet Jim and Tim – my twin brothers.

7. Question – Oh me, me, me. I have one. Pick me. Um, what is the big deal about starbucks? Before I would spend $4.00 and 7,412 calories on a cup-o-mocha-frappacino-caramel-espresso-latte, I would buy a  dozen doughnuts and an ice-cold Dr. Pepper. But that’s just me.

8. Quilt – This quilt was made by my great-grandmother and hangs in my loft. After a quilting lesson at a ladies retreat, I now realize that quilting is a lot harder than it looks.

9. Quote – My favorite quote says, “To the world, you may be one person, but to one person you are the world!” After motherhood, I can say this is so true.

10. Quarter –Two guys at our church, give Stevie and Alex a quarter at each church service and they have done that since they have been able to shake hands. Stevie’s “bottle bank” is just about filled. McDaddy has always said that Randy and Bobby would be paying for Stevie’s first car.

11. Quaker Steak and Lube – Stevie loves quaker steak and lube because of all of the cars hanging from the ceiling. We don’t go there often.

12. Quit – Things I’ve quit… birth control (twice), my Master’s Program, getting enough sleep and exercizing like I should.

13. Quaint I live in a quaint little town. I can be at the library, grocery store, pharmacy, the elementary, junior and high school, chinese restaurant, post office, family dollar, video store, fire department or gas station in less than two minutes.

I did it! (With Michelle’s help!)

That was easier than I thought.

I’m still taking suggestions for Thursday Thirteens for after we make our way through the alphabet.

Oh, and tomorrow is the last day of school in these parts.

Can you say sleep in?
